are one of the top bands leading worship and teaching Bible truth through music in the UK today. The event will have the feel of a concert, with dynamic sound and light, but there will be an opportunity to join in. Because we care about content, we want you to be able to hear the words clearly and comfortably. Song words will also be projected throughout.

Many will be familiar with Stuart's work through the BBC's Songs of Praise and through events such as New Word Alive, The Keswick Convention, Mission:Worship, Mandate, and Spring Harvest. According to CCLI, songs such as In Christ Alone, How Deep The Father’s Love, The Power Of The Cross, and Beautiful Saviour are being widely used in churches across the UK and around the world, week in week out.

Mark Edwards is one of the most sought-after keyboard players and arrangers in contemporary Christian music. Having worked with the likes of Paul Weller and Chris Rea, and performed regularly at Ronnie Scott’s and jazz festivals around the world, he now produces and plays on albums by some of the best known names in Christian music, from Matt Redman to Graham Kendrick. His recent album, Hymn to Grace, is a beautiful blend of classical and jazz-influenced arrangements of hymns and songs.

The evening will be a mixture of Stuart with the band, solo songs from Stuart, and instrumental songs from Mark (with and without band). In contrast to our previous concerts, the style will tend towards jazz and folk, with subtle lighting. Some songs will be performance, and some congregational. Stuart will also talk about the process of writing, and the message behind his songs. There will be a mix of new material and
"old favourites".

We believe it will encourage and build up Christians in their faith, and provide a high-quality, zero-cringe experience for your non-Christian friends. We had planned to take a break from concerts this year. However, there's been a steady stream of enthusiastic "What's next?" enquiries, followed by a couple of exciting new releases: Stuart's brilliant new album Creation Sings, and In Jesus, arguably the best Phatfish album yet. So we've turned from our life of ease, knuckled down, done some hard work, and are now very pleased to announce:

This is our third event with Stuart in North Wales, but this time we thought we'd do something on a smaller scale.

At this intimate solo event Stuart will perform songs (including new material from his latest album There Is A Hope) and lead worship.

The programme will be mostly acoustic, with subdued lighting and comfortable sound levels. All song lyrics will be projected. This event is suitable for all.

Words Matter

Mummy had just popped out to the shops, and Abi was at a loose end. So she found a CD to listen to, and this is the wonderful sight that greeted me eyes as I walked into the kitchen.

Those who have keen vision may have noticed that she's listening to "For Every Child" from Townend's "Monument To Mercy". We do have a lot of other CDs, but this is one of Abi's favourites at the moment.

I doubt Abi understands all of the song (indeed, I hope that some of the lines go right over her sweet little six year old head), but it does remind her that we are all in need of God's mercy.

You'll find the full lyrics of the song here. I found it particularly helpful the other day, listening on my iPod, as I walked down our high street.

As usual I passed many different people. Some were smiling, some were sad; some looked confident, others seems less so; some (like me) looked rather scruffy, others were rather well turned out; a young mum with a pram, an old lady with a walking stick; a man on a bike, and some kids in a shiny new BMW convertible (yes, in North Wales, with the top down, just a couple of weeks before Christmas)!

We don't know what's in their hearts, do we? But we do know that they are all in desperate need of God's mercy ... as am I.

Monument To Mercy - Live

I've just got in from the Stuart Townend "Monument To Mercy - Live" concert at CCK. It was well worth the seven hour trip from North Wales to Brighton!

The quality of the music was amazing. Dave Fellingham's choir, strings and brass sections made it a particularly memorable evening, and there was the usual high quality service from Lou Fellingham and the Phatfish gang, while Mark Edwards did a great job at the piano. Perhaps we should try something similar at the William Aston Hall, NEWI sometime?

It was good to be there too to hear Lou's selection from her "Treasure" album before Stuart and the hoards appeared on stage. We were then treated to a very close rendition of Stuart's album "Monument to Mercy", with additional bonus songs "O Church Arise" and "In Christ Alone" to close.

It was a really fun evening, but the real thrill was the focus on the God we adore: the Father whose grace has made us children of a King, the Son who has made this possible by dying in our place, dealing with the wrath that is justly due to us, and the Spirit who helps and strenghthens us each day and assures us of our eternal place in God's kingdom.

We should be so thankful to God for giving such gifted people to his church, who encourage and teach us so clearly from the Bible, and who help us with words to express our love and gratitude to him.

Songsmith - Stuart Townend Interview

Stuart Townend’s songs have captured the hearts of Christian people across the whole church spectrum. As he embarked on a new tour, he talked to EN.

EN: What, or whom, are your primary musical influences?

ST: I suppose my musical influences are quite varied. My church upbringing acquainted me with hymns, but I particularly loved the gospel sound of Andrae Crouch. Then there were secular music influences, which included David Bowie, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Irish folk, and Stevie Wonder, plus some classical music from my piano lessons. This helped me keep a foot in both the classical and pop genres.

EN: Tell us a little about how you write your songs.

ST: It can be very varied. Sometimes you just get a line of a melody, and that sets you on a path of adding to it, and thinking through the content. Some-times, particularly when I’m working with Keith Getty, we work through some of his musical ideas, and then decide a particular theme, based on what songs we think might be lacking in the church repertoire.

EN: Hymns seem to be very important to you. Why is that?

ST: There are a couple of reasons. Firstly, I love writing in the more concise, formal lyrical style that hymns require. I’ve always been interested in words and poetic form, so I like the challenge of a set meter and rhyming pattern. But I also like hymns because they’re so accessible to a range of churches and worship styles, from organs to bands. I love the idea that something like ‘In Christ Alone’ can work in a cathedral as well as a contemporary worship setting.

EN: What do you think makes a good hymn?

ST: That’s a whole subject in itself! I think the best hymns express the truth of the gospel in fresh, poetic, but passionate ways. Instead of using clichés, the best hymns bring revelation and illumination to familiar truths.

A Stu+Lou Wrexham Report

The William Aston Hall of NEWI, Wrexham, was packed to bursting as Stuart Townend and Lou Fellingham, “Stu and Lou”, came to town. In a hopefully first-of-many event put on by ColossiansThreeSixteen, the 900 who managed to get tickets were treated to songs from Stuart’s recently released “Monument to Mercy” album and Lou’s first solo project “Treasure”.

The night was a definite success! The first half of the evening was a time to sit back and enjoy being sung to. Starting off with Stuart’s “In every day that dawns”, with the fresh and dynamic arrangements that characterise his album, then moving on to the excellent and encouraging “Hard pressed” from Lou. A great start!

The second half of the night had us up on our feet and singing together, the song “O God of love” drawing everyone back to their seats. Stuart then led us in a few reflective songs, before we declared the victory of the resurrection in the powerful “See what a morning”.

Amongst the evening’s big encouragements were the scriptures and stories behind the songs. We heard the inspiration behind “Puritan prayer”, a song asking God to work in us through every trial and hardship, to be for further generations a signpost to God’s grace and a monument to mercy. We prayed that prayer together as we sang. Lou also spoke with a down-to-earth honesty about the reality of difficulties in the Christian life, and of the reality of our God who is to us a refuge and our strength.

At the heart of this second half, and the whole night, was the cross of Jesus. “Oh to see the dawn” reminded us with great impact of the mighty work done for us on the cross. Finally, to round off the evening, we joined in singing “In Christ alone”. It was sung like a creed, with the varying denominations proclaiming together all that we believe; the weighty truths of the incarnation, substitutionary death and resurrection life of Christ. You couldn’t help but be firmly encouraged. As Stuart closed in prayer it was clear to all that the focus of the night was God’s glory and gratitude to him for all he has done and continues to do.

Although free earplugs were available the sound was at a good level for almost everyone, and the excellent music and atmosphere of the evening was aided well by sensitive lighting. Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God”. And the purpose of the organising team for the night was “to promote music which builds up the church to the glory of God”. I’m glad to say it did exactly that.

Actually, it seems we ran out of tickets about two weeks ago -- which is all very exciting, but we really do feel for those who were too late to get tickets. If there is a "next time" we'll have to consider a bigger venue, or run for more than one night, or both! But we do hope that everyone will have learnt to "book early to avoid disappointment". Missing the concert is one thing -- just make sure you're ready for the wedding!

We've got less than a week to go, but there's still quite a lot to do. Please pray that everything will run really smoothly, that the concert will be really good for eveyone who attends, and that God will get all the glory. We're really excited about what God is doing, which is already far more than we dared to imagine!

If you are coming on Friday, make sure you allow plenty of time to find a seat. It is going to be very busy!

Wrexham Update

It looks like Stuart Townend and Lou Fellingham at NEWI on October 20th will sell out. We still have nearly 200 tickets left, but they are going quickly, so please get your skates on if you haven't got yours yet!

We have decided to hold ticket prices at the initial pre September 1st levels. Publishing stepped prices helped us a lot by encouraging many people to book early. If you have a problem with us changing our minds, please go and read Matthew 20:1-16 :)

Stuart Townend is one of the UK's most widely known and respected song writers and worship leaders. Christians across a broad spectrum enjoy his songs and hymns such as: How Deep The Father's Love, The Power of the Cross and Beautiful Saviour.

Many have been introduced to Stuart's work through the BBC's Songs of Praise, with In Christ Alone appearing in the programme's recent poll of the "top twenty hymns of all time". Others will have come across Stuart at events like Spring Harvest, Stoneleigh and The Mandate.

Stuart has released a number of studio and live recordings, the latest being the landmark album Monument to Mercy [review].

Lou Fellingham is lead singer of the band Phatfish and has recently released her exciting solo album, Treasure [review]. She is well known as a worship leader and song writer in her own right, and many would agree that she has “one of the finest voices in Christendom”.

Stuart and Lou have worked together for a number of years, and will joined on stage by other members of Phatfish.

This concert will appeal to young and old alike, and is just the sort of event to which you could invite non-Christian friends without fear of embarrassment. You can expect a vibrant programme packed with dynamic music. Sound levels will suit everyone but the most timid (because we firmly believe that the words need to be clearly heard)!
